How to Write a Short Story: A Step-by-Step Guide

To write a short story, take one character at a single moment of change, begin as close to that moment as you can, and tell it in 1,500 to 7,500 words. A short story is not a shortened novel: it carries one idea, one central shift and usually one point of view, and that constraint is what makes it work.

Most first attempts fail for the same reason. They open with background the reader does not need yet, and by the time the story starts, the word count is already spent.

Key takeaways

  • Most publishable short stories run 1,500 to 7,500 words. Under 1,000 words is flash fiction, and above 7,500 you are writing a novelette.
  • Build the piece around one character, one want and one change. Subplots and second viewpoints are what turn a short story into a failed novel.
  • Open at the moment something is already going wrong, then feed in background only where the reader would otherwise be lost.
  • Expect to cut 10 to 20 percent in revision. Short fiction is read sentence by sentence in a way novels are not.

How many words should a short story be?

Length decides where your story can be published, so settle it before you draft. These are the working categories across magazines, anthologies and competitions.

Form Word count
Micro fiction Under 500
Flash fiction 500 to 1,000
Short story 1,500 to 7,500
Novelette 7,500 to 17,500
Novella 17,500 to 40,000

The band that opens the most doors is 2,000 to 5,000 words. Below 1,500 you are competing in flash fiction categories, which are judged on different conventions, and above 7,500 the number of magazines willing to give you the pages drops sharply. Our own magazines take prose up to 3,000 words, so that is a practical target if you want a specific one to aim at.

Build the story around one want and one change

A short story needs a character who wants something specific and cannot easily have it. Specific is the load-bearing word. A character who wants happiness gives you nothing to write. A character who wants her brother to return a borrowed watch before their mother notices gives you a scene, a deadline, and a reason for people to lie to each other.

Then decide what changes. By the last line something must be different: what the character knows, what they are willing to do, or what they can no longer pretend. A story where nothing shifts reads as an anecdote, and that is the most common reason a competent piece gets declined.

Resist the second viewpoint. If you find yourself wanting chapters and a subplot, you have a novel on your hands, and our guide on how to write a book is the better place to start.

How do you start a short story?

Find the first moment the trouble is already happening and open there. Almost every first draft has two or three paragraphs of throat-clearing at the top: weather, family history, a character waking up. Delete them and read again. The story usually begins on what used to be page two.

Saadat Hasan Manto's Toba Tek Singh, published in 1955 and still the most widely taught Urdu short story, opens on the bureaucratic decision to exchange asylum inmates between India and Pakistan after Partition. There is no preamble about the asylum and no childhood for Bishan Singh. The situation is on the first page, and everything the reader needs arrives while the story is already moving.

Background belongs in the smallest doses that keep a reader oriented, delivered after they want it rather than before.

A shape that holds a short story together

Short fiction does not need the architecture of a novel, but it does need a shape. Five beats cover most published stories:

  1. The situation. Who wants what, and what stands in the way. First page.
  2. The complication. The first attempt fails, or succeeds at a price the character did not expect.
  3. The turn. New information arrives, or a decision is made that cannot be taken back.
  4. The cost. The character pays for the turn in something they valued.
  5. The last image. One concrete detail that shows what is now different.

Chapters are rarely useful at this length. A scene break, marked with a blank line or a small symbol, does the same work without asking the reader to treat the story as a small novel.

How do you end a short story?

End on the smallest concrete thing that shows the change: an action, an object, a line of dialogue. Explaining the meaning in a closing paragraph undoes the work the story just did. If you can delete your final paragraph and the piece still lands, delete it. That holds true for a surprising number of drafts.

Cut it back to length

A hand marking corrections on a printed page with a red pen, the revision pass that cuts a short story down to its final word count.

Short fiction lives or dies in revision. Draft loosely, rest the piece for a week, then come back with a target: remove 10 to 20 percent without losing anything the reader needs. What usually goes:

  • The opening paragraphs, for the reason above.
  • Adverbs attached to dialogue tags. "She said" is invisible. "She said angrily" asks the reader to take your word for something the scene should have shown.
  • Filter verbs: she saw, he felt, they noticed. Cut the filter and the reader stands in the scene instead of watching a character have it.
  • Description doing nothing but atmosphere. In 3,000 words every detail should carry character, plot, or both.

Read the whole thing aloud once before you call it finished, since the ear catches repetition and flat dialogue that the eye slides over. Our self-editing checklist for authors covers the line-level pass in more detail.

Where to send a short story in Pakistan

A reader lifting a book from a shelf in a bookshop, where short story collections and anthologies sit alongside novels.

One finished story has more places to go here than a first novel does, which is part of why short fiction remains the standard way Pakistani writers build a publication record.

Literary magazines are the usual first destination. A themed issue tells you what an editor is looking for, which beats guessing at a general slush pile. Our guide to literary magazines in Pakistan covers what is currently open, including the Urdu digests that carry the largest readership for Urdu fiction in the country. You can send a piece to one of our magazines through the magazine sample submission page.

Anthologies put your story inside a printed book alongside other authors, with your name on the cover as a co-author. That is a different credit from a magazine appearance and a faster route to holding a book than writing one alone. Our anthologies page explains how a title comes together.

Competitions give a story a deadline, which finishes more drafts than inspiration does. Our roundup of writing competitions and literary awards Pakistani writers can enter lists the open ones, and the TWS Literary Excellence Award is our own.

A collection of your own becomes realistic once you have roughly eight to fifteen linked or thematically related stories. Publishers taking short fiction in Pakistan are fewer than those taking novels, and they include the independent presses founded since 2020, the older houses that run occasional literary lists, and self-publishing houses such as TWS Publications. Our four packages run from a paperback first edition to nationwide bookstore distribution, with author royalties up to 80% of profit, and you keep 100% of your copyright. Our publishing process page sets out each stage.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should a short story be?

Most short stories run 1,500 to 7,500 words, and 2,000 to 5,000 is the band most magazines and competitions accept. Under 1,000 words the piece is flash fiction, and above 7,500 it becomes a novelette, which far fewer publications have the room to print.

How do you start a short story?

Open at the first moment the trouble is already happening, not before it. Cut the weather, the family history and the character waking up, since most drafts begin properly on what was page two. Supply background afterwards, in small doses, once the reader wants it.

How long does it take to write a short story?

A first draft of 3,000 words takes most writers a few focused sessions, often a week around a job. Revision matters more than drafting at this length, so allow another two to three weeks, including a rest of at least seven days before you reread and cut.

What is the difference between a short story and flash fiction?

Flash fiction runs under 1,000 words and micro fiction under 500, while a short story runs 1,500 to 7,500. The difference is not only length. Flash fiction usually turns on a single image or moment, where a short story has room for a complication and a cost.

Where can I publish a short story in Pakistan?

Literary magazines are the usual first destination, followed by anthologies, competitions, and eventually a collection of your own. Outlets include the Urdu digests, independent presses founded since 2020, and publishers such as TWS Publications, which runs themed magazines, multi-author anthologies and a literary award open to Pakistani writers.
