About this book

What does growing up look like when it's captured one poem at a time?

Growing up is seldom linear. It unfolds in fragments, in the questions we carry, the people we become, and the versions of ourselves we leave behind.

From Beginning to Centre is a collection of poems that captures those fragments, reminding us that perhaps the most beautiful part of life is that we are always becoming.

Written between the ages of seven and seventeen, these poems were kept not because they were the author's best, but because they were her truest — each one a record of a different version of the girl who wrote it. Together they trace a decade of noticing: fear and friendship, grief and gardens, stage fright and first-born disorder, and the strange in-between of being both too young and too old at once.

Behind The Book

About the Author

Shehrzad Ahmed wrote her first poem at seven years old, after a Grade 4 teacher asked the class to try. From Beginning to Centre is her debut collection, gathering ten years of that writing — poems she kept not because they were her best, but because they were her truest. At seventeen, she describes the book not as an ending but as her centre: a story that is still being written.
